Sulfur hexafluoride is produced by the direct fluorination of pure (elemental) sulfur, usually by companies that produce fluorine for other purposes, such as the production of fluorocarbons.

Sulfur hexafluoride

One of the main uses of sulfur hexafluoride is as an insulating medium in circuit breakers, switchgear, substations and gas-insulated transmission lines. For these applications, the gases used must meet or exceed ASTM D272 and IEC specifications.
